These terms cover your use of the spfscout.com website and the SPF Scout app.

Interim

This is a short, plain-language notice. It is interim: it is not a full terms of use, and it will be replaced when one is drafted. Until then it is the notice that applies.

What SPF Scout is

SPF Scout reports label facts. It shows the ingredient declaration stored for a product, what each listed ingredient generally does in a formulation, and where that record came from. It is educational and informational.

SPF Scout provides educational ingredient and product-label information. It does not diagnose allergies or skin conditions, provide medical advice, or determine whether a product is safe or appropriate for you. Ingredient lists and formulations can change. Always verify the packaging and consult a qualified healthcare professional regarding allergies or skin conditions.

What SPF Scout is not

  • It does not diagnose allergies or skin conditions.
  • It does not identify what you are allergic to.
  • It does not rate, rank, endorse or recommend any product.
  • It does not predict whether your skin will react to anything.

Accuracy, and why you must check the package

Formulations change, and a manufacturer can change one without changing the front of the package. Every record here carries the date it was last verified and the source it came from. Always compare this record with your current package.

Records are drafted from published sources. Most are reviewed by a person before they appear; a narrow tier of U.S. records drawn from FDA labels that meets a fixed set of conditions is published automatically. Errors are possible either way. If you find one, please report it — each record page carries a link for exactly that, and corrections are the fastest way to improve the catalog.

No warranty

The website, the app and their content are provided as they are, without warranties of any kind. We do not warrant that the information is complete, current or error-free.

Third-party products and names

Brand and product names belong to their respective owners and are used here to identify the products a record describes. Their appearance does not imply any affiliation with, or endorsement by or of, SPF Scout.

Where the data comes from

  • U.S. product records are drawn from the FDA’s DailyMed database of published drug labels.
  • EU product data includes information from Open Beauty Facts, © its contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL).
  • Ingredient functions and identifiers are grounded in CosIng, the European Commission database of cosmetic ingredients. CosIng content © European Union.
